Paatal Lok Season 2
The show returns after 5 years, sharper and better, blending a police procedural with the lives of its characters and the pressures of the outside world.
Paatal Lok, one of the best Indian web shows on Amazon Prime Video, began with a plot to assassinate a news channel’s editor-in-chief. Season 2, however, starts with a brutal murder, marking a sharp shift from the first season’s storyline.
Paatal Lok Season 1, released in 2020, impressed web series audiences greatly. Featuring talented actors, Prime Video kept fans waiting for years to see Jaideep Ahlawat return as the dedicated cop Hathiram Chaudhary and Ishwak Singh as Imran Ansari, his junior-turned-senior.
Paatal Lok Season 2 takes viewers to a completely different world
In Paatal Lok 2, the story progresses with Inspector Hathiram Chaudhary still serving in his role, while his junior, Ansari, has been promoted to ACP. Hathiram’s son, Siddharth, has moved to a hostel in another city for his studies, leaving his wife (Gul Panag) feeling a sense of emptiness despite her quiet support for Hathiram.
Hathiram’s former senior and old colleague, Virk (played by Anurag Arora), has joined the forensic department. The story takes off when Hathiram reluctantly takes up a low-profile case, which unexpectedly connects him to a high-profile murder investigation. This involves the brutal beheading of Jonathan Thom, a prominent businessman and respected politician from Nagaland.
Hathiram and Ansari team up once again to solve the case, which takes them to Nagaland. There, they meet senior police officer Tilottama Shome. As they delve deeper into the murder mystery, the case becomes increasingly complex and chaotic. The story unfolds with numerous twists and turns, leading to a conclusion that is shocking, emotional, and satisfying all at once.
Writing and Direction
Like the first season, Hathiram continues his search for truth, battling the flaws in the system. Director Avinash Arun Dhavare takes this journey forward in a ruthless yet humane thriller. The mood is set right from the murder scene in the first episode. As the story progresses, the number of murders and conspiracies grows, bringing Hathiram closer to uncovering the truth.
The director skilfully portrays the dark story of murder against the stunning backdrop of Nagaland. The series stands out for its originality and realism. While there are hints of other crime-based shows, its storytelling style is unique. This second season is more subtle and refined than the first.
The combination of Hindi, English, and Nagaland’s local languages is beautifully portrayed. The plot is slightly complex with multiple subplots, which might confuse the audience. However, the makers skillfully justify everything. Credit goes to Sudip and the other writers for crafting powerful dialogues for Jaideep. Adding Hathiram’s emotional struggles and Ansari’s love story was a smart and well-executed choice. Paatal Lok Season 2 sets an example for web series creators on how to make a successful sequel, especially since many Indian web series fail to deliver in their second season.
