The deadline to file your income tax return (ITR) has been extended. Earlier, the last date was 31st July, but now you can file your return till 15th September 2025.
This change has been made by the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) because there are some updates happening in Form 16 and the ITR filing system.
The ITR filing process may start in June. First, the simple forms ITR-1 and ITR-4 will be available. After that, the more detailed forms ITR-2 and ITR-3 will be released.
CBDT has notified all the ITR forms from ITR-1 to ITR-7, but the necessary online tools like JSON, Excel, and e-filing utilities are still not available on the portal.
This delay is happening because of the following reasons:
Changes made in Form-16
Updates in all ITR forms from ITR-1 to ITR-7
Backend technology of the income tax portal has not been upgraded yet
That’s why the e-filing process is getting delayed.
