Let us tell you that Ladki Bahin Scheme was launched by the Mahayuti government in June 2024. And under this scheme government promised to pay ₹1,500 per month to women from families earning less than ₹2.5 lakh annually.
Many women, especially from Pune, Solapur, and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar districts, have started withdrawing their applications after reviewing the Chief Minister’s Ladki Bahin scheme.
According to Manisha Biraris, the Women and Child Development (WCD) officer in Pune district, three women from Pune city have requested to withdraw their applications. She mentioned that the reasons include mistakes like incorrect Aadhaar card details or accidental submissions.
Biraris added that there is no instruction from the state government to disqualify applicants or recover any payments from those who choose to withdraw from the scheme.
In Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, 10 women have withdrawn their applications, and in Solapur, seven women have done the same. Ramesh Katkar, the WCD officer in Solapur, stated that the reasons given for withdrawal include securing new jobs or mistakenly applying for the scheme.
The Mahayuti government launched the Ladki Bahin Yojana in June 2024, just before the assembly elections. The scheme promised ₹1,500 per month to women from families earning less than ₹2.5 lakh annually. If re-elected, the amount would increase to ₹2,100 per month.
The scheme was rolled out in July 2024, and so far, ₹7,500 has been disbursed to 2.47 crore women over five months. The sixth installment is being processed.
However, there have been concerns about the financial strain of the scheme. Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, who handles finance, estimated the annual cost of the scheme at ₹46,000 crore, warning that it could put pressure on the state’s finances and affect government salaries.
Reports during the elections also showed that some wealthier women had received benefits from the scheme.
After Mahayuti’s landslide win in the assembly elections, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced that the list of beneficiaries would be reviewed, as reported on December 6, 2024.
Women and Child Development (WCD) Minister Aditi Tatkare has confirmed that the eligibility criteria for benefits remain the same, limiting assistance to women from economically weaker sections with annual family incomes below ₹2.5 lakh.
She emphasized the need for scrutiny to ensure that only deserving beneficiaries receive the aid.
WCD officials, speaking anonymously, mentioned that this scrutiny announcement has caused concern among some beneficiaries. They fear their applications might be rejected, and they may have to repay the aid they’ve received. This uncertainty seems to be leading to requests for withdrawals from the scheme.
